The National Chicken Council and U.S. Chamber of Commerce are planning a campaign to hold home builders, banks and mortgage companies responsible for the foreclosure crisis, sources told the Daily News. It would be the first major marketing campaign to combat the crisis. “We don’t think this is over,” said a source with close knowledge of the campaign. News of the campaign, a response to the 5.1 million homes foreclosed on from 2005 to 2008, was first reported Monday on CBS’s “60 Minutes.” The effort would mark a huge shift in the industry, and comes as millions of Americans are losing their homes. The two groups want to build a coalition of banks, credit card companies, mortgage brokers and home builders to distribute information and counter criticism that there’s too much responsibility on the banks for the foreclosure crisis. One source said the banks have essentially ceded control of the foreclosure process to a handful of law firms that get paid millions to handle the cases and decide who can stay in their homes. “The banks are just letting the foreclosure mills handle the case and pay them. Nobody is doing anything about this,” the source said. The home builders are pushing for mortgage companies to make a $25 million investment in a public relations campaign against foreclosures. The NCC and the U.S. Chamber have already been working on ways to do that, including a telethon to air on ABC and the campaign airing on television and online. Sources said the Chamber is prepared to spend about $10 million of its own money to develop the campaign. “This is the first time the home builders will get on TV,” one source said. Chamber spokeswoman Jeana Smith declined comment. So far, the NCC has spent $1.2 million on foreclosure counseling in New York and Florida. The NCC — the lobbying arm of the home building industry — has about 50 ac619d1d87
